Have a question about how things work in the department or here at Ball State? Check below for information on how to submit travel forms, apply for conference funding, and more.
Q:Roughly, what is the average time to completion of degrees?
A:2-3 years for MA, 5-6 years for PhD.
Q:What are the language criteria for PhDs?
A:Graduate students are required to have reading competency in one language; to satisfy this requirement students may pass test with a dictionary, have a clear understanding of the language already (fluency), or comp out of the requirement because of a high GPA in the langauge. More specific information is located in the Graduate Student Handbook through the BSU Graduate School.
Q:Can I get copies of PhD comprehensive exams?
A:You can obtain copies of past exams on this website or you can go to Kim Heston in the department’s Graduate Office.
Q: Can graduate students get funding for conferences?
A:Yes they can. The Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) offers limited funding for students. SAGE plans to offer funds starting during the 2006-2007 school year, and graduate students can get a limited reimbursement through the BSU Graduate School.
Q: I got into a conference; now what do I do?
A:See Jama in the English Department Office to obtain travel forms. You may also be able to reserve a university vehicle for your trip; this request can also be made on the travel form.
Q: I want to visit campus and the department. Who should I contact to arrange this?
A:You can contact any of the executive board members of SAGE. You can also email the English Graduate office and they may be able to match you up with a contact.
